Q:
What
particle size range does jet milling produce?
A: Jet
milling is typically used to grind a dry powder to a range of 0.5 to 45
microns. Customers generally require smaller particle sizes to increase
the surface area of their product. Maximizing surface area can provide
the following benefits:
• Improved reaction rates for catalysts
and explosives • Improved absorption in the body for
pharmaceuticals • Improved suspension of specialty
chemicals • Improved color characteristics for
pigments • Smoother textures for pigments or
foods • Improved strength qualities of
products
These
particles sizes are very small. For a point of reference, below are
typical objects in the size range of a jet milled powder.
3–4 ?m – size of a typical yeast cell 6 ?m – thickness of the tape in a
120-minute compact cassette 7 ?m – diameter of human red blood cell 3–8 ?m – width of strand of spider web
silk 8–11 ?m – size of a ground-level fog or
mist droplet 10 ?m – width of cotton fiber 10 ?m – transistor width of the Intel
4004, the world's first commercial microprocessor 10 to 55 ?m – width of wool fiber 25.4 ?m – 1/1,000 inch, commonly
referred to as 1 mil in the U.S. and 1 thou in the UK 70 to 180 ?m – thickness of paper 100 ?m – smallest distance that can be
seen with the naked eye 100 ?m – average diameter of a strand of
human hair
